Preet Johal

Pre-licensed Counsellor

Hi, I’m Tejpreet Johal, but you can call me Preet. With over a decade of experience in social services, including child protection and mental health crisis intervention, I’ve dedicated my career to supporting marginalized communities. My journey began with a deep desire to understand and help others, especially those facing unique cultural and systemic challenges. My passion for providing compassionate, culturally informed and safe counselling is reflected in my work and my Instagram page, Beyond Birth Therapist, where I share insights and support. I am currently a MA counselling psychology practicum student, who is qualified to practice under the clinical supervision of an approved practicum supervisor. My Approach: I offer therapy through an anti-racist, anti-oppressive lens, ensuring that all clients receive fair, quality, and equal mental health services. I focus on serving disproportionate and underserved communities, including immigrants, first-generation individuals, and BIPOC communities. I aim to create a safe, welcoming space where you can explore your challenges and heal. **Specialties**: 1. **Cultural Identity & Racial Trauma**: Navigating the complexities of cultural identity and addressing racial trauma are central to my practice. I understand the unique pressures and experiences of South Asian communities and other BIPOC individuals. 2. **Intergenerational Trauma**: I help clients explore and break the cycles of harm caused by intergenerational trauma, fostering resilience and healing. 3. **Reproductive Trauma & Infertility:** Whether dealing with infertility, pregnancy loss, or perinatal mental health issues, I offer compassionate and informed support. 4. **Relationship Issues:** From setting boundaries, exploring new life roles/responsibilities, to overcoming imposter syndrome, I provide guidance on maintaining healthy, fulfilling relationships. 5. **Mental Health Crisis Intervention:** My experience in mental health crisis intervention equips me to offer effective strategies for managing anxiety, depression, and self-harm. **Therapeutic Approach:** As a person-centered therapist, I believe that you are the expert of your own life experiences. My role is to support and guide you, utilizing an integrated approach that draws from various therapeutic modalities to best meet your unique needs. Whether through cognitive-behavioral therapy, Gottman’s Method, narrative therapy, mindfulness-based techniques, or trauma-informed practices, I tailor my methods to support your healing and growth. **Why Choose Me:** I’ve faced my share of adversities, including personal loss, death of a parent, trauma and fertility struggles, which has given me a profound understanding of what it means to hit rock bottom and find the strength to rise again. This lived experience, combined with my professional expertise, allows me to offer a unique blend of empathy and practical support. As a first-generation counsellor, I understand the unique struggles faced by immigrant families and BIPOC communities. My practice is grounded in empathy, cultural competence, and a commitment to social justice. I aim to fill the gap in mental health care by offering support that is both informed and deeply personal. Everyone deserves good mental health care and counselling services, and I strive to provide that in a way that is culturally nuanced and sensitive to your unique experiences.
