Biography
Neal Henderson (he/him) is a seasoned mental health professional with over 30 years of experience in the human services field. He is the founder and lead therapist at Creating Your Balance Counselling Therapy in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Neal holds a Master of Education in Counselling from Acadia University and is a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, a Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT) with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists, and a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers. Throughout his extensive career, Neal has worked in various settings, including adult rehabilitation, youth care, education, and mental health and addictions programs. His diverse background encompasses roles such as Educational Program Assistant, Student Support Worker, foster parent, and instructor for adult education programs. Neal's therapeutic approach is holistic and client-centered, emphasizing the belief that individuals are doing the best they can with the resources they have. He adopts a "leading from behind" methodology, empowering clients as the experts of their own lives. His training includes Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Structured Relapse Prevention (SRP), Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT), and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). At Creating Your Balance Counselling Therapy, Neal offers individual, couples, family, and group counselling services. He specializes in addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, interpersonal relationships, and addictions. Neal is particularly passionate about group work, having facilitated sessions focused on psychoeducation, depression, family matters, and DBT skills. Neal is committed to reducing barriers to therapy and creating a supportive environment where clients feel heard and valued.
