Mabel Reimer
Registered Social Worker & DBT Therapist
I have over 20 years experience working with teens, adults and families across a variety of settings. I specialize in using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for highly sensitive and neurodivergent individuals who struggle with emotion regulation and self-acceptance. DBT has been shown to be effective with individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, ADHD, disordered eating and those experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harm. I also find adapted DBT is helpful for many clients who simply want to handle stress differently, communicate more effectively with others and feel more in control of their lives. DBT skills are truly for everyone and can be a huge game changer for anyone who feels 'stuck' with traditional talk therapy. I enjoy working with teens who may not be super excited about therapy, young adults who are having a hard time getting started on the whole "adulting" piece and adults who are ready to make some changes and try something new.
I am not a typical therapist in many ways. I prefer not to meet people in an office. I prefer to wear jeans. I despise neutral tones and ‘professional’ vibes. I believe part of my role is to eliminate barriers and offer support in a way that is accessible. I believe we need community and connection more than therapy. I also believe life is hard and can be so fulfilling if we all share our gifts and help each other out along the way. As a therapist, I blend my passion for mental health with my belief in the power of relationships, my love of teaching, and my creative and down-to-earth approach to creating solutions.
I received my BSc and BSW from McGill University, before completing my MSW at Dalhousie University. I have completed intensive training in DBT with the Behavior Tech Institute and I am part of a DBT consultation team that meets weekly.
