Depression can feel like moving through waist deep water while everyone else is on dry land. Things that used to matter somehow don’t anymore, and you’re exhausted just trying to keep up. Anxiety is a feeling of worry about what's going to happen in the next moment, this week, or long into the future - and you’re tired of bracing for impact every day. During life transitions, the old version of your life is gone, but the new one hasn't shown up yet. Across any of these challenges, even though there are people around you who care, a part of you feels alone in your problems.
It may feel nice to hear “It’s going to be ok” or “You are not alone”, but honestly a part of you doesn’t agree. The challenges and hurts of the past are stored in our nervous system and impact how we interact with our day to day life. We can’t just “tell” our nervous system that everything’s ok. We need new lived experiences to teach ourselves this truth.
Most of us can understand how our childhood impacted the way we live as adults, but this doesn’t change anything. Insights are not what therapy is about. Together we create an environment where you can be understood and accepted unlike in daily life - when this genuinely happens, real change and growth occur.
My practice is called Ubuntu Therapy. Ubuntu means "I am because we are". Ubuntu is why I do the work I do. Actively taking responsibility for caring about ourselves and each other makes life rich in meaning. I am also grateful for the times I have been on the other side, receiving support - those experiences have given me a deep compassion and respect for how hard it can sometimes feel to be a person in this world.
