Robert Hill

Psychologist

I work primarily with adults to assess and treat a variety of psychological issues, including anxiety (panic, OCD, social, and generalized), depression, emotion regulation, trauma, anger, self-esteem and self-worth, perfectionism, grief, major life changes, interpersonal issues, assertiveness, and personal growth. I have a great deal of experience working with people struggling with motivation, perfectionism, self-worth, and fostering their ambitions. I am interested in helping individuals who feel overwhelmed, battle with panic or anxiety attacks, or feel generally stuck, depressed, or lost in their life. I also have experience assessing and treating trauma, including first responders. I regularly work with individuals experiencing the impacts of health issues on their mental health, including post-concussion, mild traumatic brain injuries, and chronic pain. In terms of our work together, I aim to be flexible and adapt to your style and goals. Therapy is not a one-size fits all approach and it’s important that what we do together works for you. In our first session, I work with you to get a sense of what you are struggling with and build a comprehensive picture of this process. I also provide you with my understanding of how we can best tackle these issues, getting your feedback in the process. Our early sessions tend to be more structured, as we start to better understand what’s at the root of your struggles and integrating different strategies that will help you achieve your goals. Overall, my aim is to help you make sense of your experiences, understand the context underlying what you are going through, and identify ways to address, accept, or change that better works for you. My approach is integrative, meaning that I rely on various evidenced-based treatment approaches based on your needs. These include, cognitive-behavioural, exposure-based, emotion-focused, interpersonal, DBT, acceptance and commitment, trauma-informed approaches, and psychodynamic. I take an active approach in therapy, sharing my thoughts and impressions, as well as communicating the underlying rationale for the approach. I am a supervising psychologist at CFIR. Over the past 10 years, I have worked in private practice providing individual psychotherapy, conducting psychological assessments to diagnose mental illness (including through WSIB), and running various groups for anxiety and emotion regulation. I have worked in various hospital settings in Ottawa, including at The Ottawa Hospital (psychosocial oncology and the Rehab Centre conducting both individual and group work, as well as at the Royal Ottawa Hospital in the mood and anxiety program. I completed my training at the University of Ottawa, including an internship at the Centre for Psychological Services and Research. I have published a number of papers on topics ranging from defense mechanism use and Binge Eating, to volunteering and prosocial behaviours. I am a licensed psychologist with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario, specializing in adult and health populations.
