Myriam Hernandez
Registered Psychotherapist
I work with individual adults and couples from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds, gender, and sexual orientation. As individuals, it is natural to aim to have a fulfilling and purposeful life and, for this, it is important to understand how we function so we can regulate our emotions and how we make sense of life experiences so we can give them meaning. I work with clients who are experiencing: stress, depression, anxiety, loss and grieving, anger, self-esteem issues, shame or guilt, life transitions, identity, gender, sexual dissatisfaction, and feelings of emptiness. I also work with clients who are dealing with past or present trauma or traumatic events. With couples, I work on communication issues, but more importantly on attachment ruptures, or issues affecting a sense of connection, differentiation as well as intimacy and sexuality.
When we first meet, we will talk about your current concerns in a way that you feel comfortable. This first session gives up an opportunity to get to know one another. It will help me get to know you, your core values and views about life and relationships, and understand your needs and therapeutic goals. In order to help you gain a better understanding of what might be at the root of your struggles, I will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your difficulties using different measurement tools and collecting information about key individuals, events and situations in your life. With all this information, we can work together to identify and refine your goals for therapy and develop a plan to explore the issues and achieve your goals.
I offer to my clients a holistic and integrative approach to therapy. A holistic perspective informs my therapeutic approach taking into consideration that mental health and wellbeing is more than the absence of mental health conditions; also understanding that socialization is another core aspect to support all aspect of our health. My integrative approach is informed by the use of different theoretical frameworks and interventions to conceptualize cases and develop treatment plans which are adapted to the specific needs of my clients.
I work as a Registered Psychotherapist at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships (CFIR). I am committed to ongoing professional development by regularly attending conferences and workshops. I also follow new developments in relevant professional literature to base my work on current scientific evidence.
